Fishing

Trout Flyfishing

Flathead Lake is a fisherman’s dream, with over 30 different fish species.  The primary sport fishing species are Lake Trout, Pike, Yellow Perch, Whitefish, Rainbow Trout, Bass, Kokonee Salmon, and Bull Trout.

Lake trout can reach monstrous sizes, in excess of 20 pounds.  Average size lake trout are in the 3-8 pound range and are caught frequently.  Most of the year, the lake trout stay in deep water, so trolling with down riggers is needed to catch them,  The exception to this is in the fall when they come close into shore, and can be caught on a fly rod.

Fly fishing on the rivers flowing into Flathead Lake and other nearby tributaries can also be exciting.  Floating the Flathead River in a drift boat is the best way to catch native Westslope Cutthroat and Bull Trout.
